Big Idea: Everyone gets angry, but not everyone gets angry about things that matter.
“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” James 1:19-21
What is anger? Is Anger wrong?
Anger defined - a God given emotional response usually tied to a goal, value or expectation. It usually ignites when we feel hurt or rejected.
Anger is not always wrong. Two Greek words in the NT for “Anger.” One means “passion, energy” and the other means “agitated, boiling.” Anger turns to sin when it becomes selfish.
"A fool gives full vent to anger, but a wise person quietly holds it back.” Proverbs 29:11
Anger is a warning light built in by God. Think of the Incredible Hulk!
Anger uncontrolled will control you. "And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.” Ephesians 4:27.
“Whoever makes you mad, controls you”
Anger left alone destroys relationships
Is this even worth getting angry about?
Machine gun: Destroys everyone fast. Time bomb: Takes time but when it blows, it leaves a mess.
How do we learn to control anger? Listen when someone else is talking....
Be slow to speak!
Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” Ephesians 4:29
Words come from our hearts. What we say stems from what we believe.
Questions to ask: Will the words I say build others up or tear others them down?
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18.
3. Avoid giving into anger. “Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” James 1:20-21
Uncontrolled anger stops you from listening to God.
For when people get angry they do not do the good things God wants them to do. You cannot control what others say or do, but you can always control how you respond. Humility is the attitude we need to accept God’s truth into our hearts.
Overcoming anger is not changed overnight. Memorize and meditate on scripture, prayer and reliance upon the Holy Spirit will begin the process of changing your heart.
Jesus always responded with grace, even on the cross.
Respond with God’s grace because of the grace given to us through the cross. What are you angry about? What are your pet peeves? What fires you up?
Everyone gets angry, but not everyone gets angry about things that matter.
